Tanzania Banks

This directory helps people in Tanzania find clear, practical information about banks and other licensed financial institutions. You can use it to look for a branch, find a bank’s phone number and other contact details, or check whether an institution holds a licence. It covers institutions across Tanzania, including branches in Dar es Salaam, the country’s largest city.

Licence information is checked against the register published by the Bank of Tanzania, the country’s regulator. The register currently lists 228 licensed institutions of all kinds in Tanzania. Of these, 44 are commercial banks. You can use the directory to identify an institution and then review its branch, contact, and licence information.

Some entries are for banks that have closed or changed their names. These entries are kept on purpose because people may still search for an old name or need to understand what happened to an institution. Each such entry includes a note explaining that the bank has closed or been renamed. This helps readers avoid confusing an old record with a currently operating institution.

Akiba Commercial Bank (ACB) commenced banking operations in August 1997 as an initiative of over 300 Tanzanian entrepreneurs who were inspired overall to move into micro-finance, by the moral and economical concern for the plight of Tanzanians.
